The foreground depicts a galloping horse with an Indian rider drawing a bow, and an American bison running away from the pursuit. The background features relief outlines of mountain ranges and clouds, with no rigid framing surrounding the piece. The American bison has an anatomical feature: its massive hump consists not of fat deposits, but of powerful spinous processes of the spine and muscles necessary to support and turn its heavy head.
