The middle ground is occupied by hunting accessories, game, and a dog, while the background displays a flat autumn landscape with sparse trees and the horizon. The entire scene is framed within a classical rectangular molding with a multi-step profile. The artist's original 1871 painting sparked fierce debate in the contemporary press: critics argued over whether the characters depicted authentic rural types or caricatures.
