Panel "Old Sailor and Mermaid" (Model 5077) STL

The rectangular relief panel is based on a contrast of textures and a multi-tiered composition. In the foreground, inside a wooden boat, are the figures of an old sailor with a pipe holding a mug of foamy drink, and a mermaid whose fish tail and hair entangled in a fishing net intertwine with the side of the vessel. In the background, the water surface, coastal reeds, a barrel, an anchor, as well as the silhouettes of coastal cliffs and architectural structures forming the backdrop are elaborately detailed in relief. In European folklore, mermaids and sea maidens traditionally acted as dual characters, embodying both the dangers of the water element and good luck for fishermen.
