The composition of the relief is structured in three planes: the foreground features foot and mounted ancient Russian warriors with weapons and shields, the middle ground is occupied by the central equestrian group under a banner with a face, and the background depicts the silhouettes of the army, a hilly landscape, the sun, and soaring birds. The rectangular frame of the relief is decorated with a geometric meander ornament and corner solar symbols. Historically, ancient Russian squads performed prayer services before a campaign and carried banners with the image of the Image Not Made by Hands, which served as the main symbol of the military standard.
