The foreground depicts the figure of Uncle Chernomor in a caftan with a welcoming gesture, while the middle and background show a company of thirty-three armored heroes emerging from sea waves with raised spears. The image of Chernomor originates from folklore traditions regarding guardian dwarfs possessing supernatural strength and a monumental beard that held their magical power, which was later adapted by Alexander Pushkin in 'The Tale of Tsar Saltan'.
