The bas-relief composition represents a traditional still life placed on a horizontal table surface covered with a draped tablecloth. The foreground and middle ground feature detailed hanging grape clusters, fruits in a vessel, jugs, and kitchen utensils, forming a multi-tiered dense group without a fixing external frame. In the history of European painting, still life was long considered the lowest genre in the academic hierarchy until the 17th century in Dutch art when it acquired independent philosophical significance as an allegory of the transience of life.
