The middle ground is occupied by the monumental figure of the three-headed Zmey Gorynych with spread wings, looming over the central character. The composition is executed without a frame, and the edges of the panel have a rectangular cut. According to Slavic mythological concepts, the Kalinov Bridge across the Smorodina River symbolizes the border between the world of the living and the world of the dead, and the duel on it is an archetypal plot of the hero's transition to a new status.
