The Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon, who lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries in Nicomedia, is revered in the Christian tradition as an unmercenary physician who suffered martyrdom for his faith during the persecutions of Emperor Maximian. According to his hagiography, the young man studied medicine, but healed primarily through the name of Christ rather than medicines alone, earning profound public veneration. Traditional iconography depicts him with standard attributes—a medicine box and a small spoon—emphasizing his ministry to the suffering. Believers pray before this image for healing from severe illnesses, the strengthening of physical and spiritual resilience, and for guidance upon physicians and medical practitioners.
