Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Princess Olga († 969) entered history as the ruler who laid the foundation of Christian statehood in Kievan Rus. Having received baptism in Constantinople around 957, she initiated the Christian mission in her homeland, foreshadowing the widespread conversion of Rus by her grandson, Prince Vladimir. In iconography, Princess Olga is traditionally depicted holding a cross, symbolizing her personal feat of faith and the enlightenment of a pagan nation. The faithful pray before this image for spiritual fortitude, guidance in faith, protection from adversity, and the bestowal of wisdom in governance and life decisions.
