Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries and is venerated throughout the Christian world as a great wonderworker and intercessor. The iconographic type of the half-length image of the saint in hierarchical vestments, holding the Gospels and raising his hand in blessing, developed in Byzantine art toward the end of the first millennium. In Rus', this imagery became widespread from the very adoption of Christianity. Within the Orthodox tradition, the faithful pray before this icon for protection from misfortune, safe travels, healing from illnesses, and for family well-being and the resolution of difficult life situations.
