Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries and is revered throughout the Christian world as a great wonderworker and intercessor. The half-length iconographic type featuring the saint with a blessing right hand and the Gospel developed in Byzantine art and subsequently became widespread in Orthodox tradition. Flanking the central figure are Christ and the Virgin Mary, returning the episcopal omophorion and the Gospel to the saint, commemorating the miraculous event of the First Council of Nicaea. Believers pray before this image for protection during journeys, healing from afflictions, assistance in dire needs, and fair judgment.
