"Icon of the Mother of God" (Model 538) STL

The iconographic type depicted in this model dates back to ancient Byzantine prototypes of the Eleusa (Tenderness) type, which became widespread in Rus from the 11th and 12th centuries. The relief presents the Most Holy Theotokos, pressing the Christ Child to her cheek with maternal tenderness, while His cheek touches His Mother's face. This touching gesture symbolizes the inseparable bond between the earthly and the heavenly, as well as the foreboding of the Savior's suffering on the cross. In the Orthodox tradition, believers pray before icons of this type for the grant of spiritual peace, the strengthening of family bonds, healing from severe ailments, and protection from disasters.
