Saint Panteleimon the Healer, who lived at the turn of the 3rd and 4th centuries in Nicomedia, is revered in the Christian tradition as an unmercenary physician and the patron of the sick. According to his hagiography, he received a medical education and came to faith in Christ after healing a blind man by the power of God. In iconography, the saint is traditionally depicted full-length, wearing a chiton and himation, holding a tiny spoon in his right hand and a medicine box with healing ointments in his left. Full-length icons emphasize his intercession before the throne of God. Believers pray before this image for physical and spiritual healing, deliverance from serious illnesses, and the strengthening of faith during times of trial.
