Icon "Saint Ludmila" (Model 720) STL

Holy Martyr Ludmila, Duchess of Bohemia, lived at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries and stood at the origins of the Christianization of Slavic lands alongside her husband, Duke Bořivoj. As the grandmother of Saint Wenceslas, she profoundly shaped his spiritual upbringing and laid the foundations for Czech Christian statehood. She suffered martyrdom around 921 AD when she was strangled by order of her daughter-in-law, Drahomíra. In iconography, the saint is traditionally depicted wearing a princely crown and a headscarf signifying widowhood and her martyric feat, holding a cross as a symbol of the victory of faith over death. In Orthodox tradition, the faithful pray before this image for wisdom in raising children, the protection of the family, and the strengthening of faith during times of persecution and hardship.
