Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, lived in the 4th century and is revered throughout the Christian world as a great wonderworker and intercessor. The traditional iconography depicting the saint in hierarchical vestments with a blessing right hand and the Gospel was established in Byzantine art during the Middle Ages. In this icon, Jesus Christ and the Theotokos are traditionally depicted flanking the saint, returning the Gospel and omophorion to him in memory of the miracle at the First Council of Nicaea. Believers pray before this image for protection during journeys, deliverance from misfortunes, healing of ailments, and assistance in difficult life circumstances.
