Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, lived in the late 3rd and first half of the 4th century and is venerated as one of the greatest Christian saints. The iconography of the saint developed over centuries, establishing his image as an intercessor, a protector of the falsely accused, and a helper of travelers. In the Orthodox tradition, prayers are traditionally offered before this image for healing, resolution of severe life circumstances, safe journeys, and protection from disasters.
