Holy Right-Believing Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky (1221–1263) holds a pivotal place in Russian history as an outstanding military commander and statesman who defended the northwestern borders of Rus in the 13th century. The official canonization of the prince took place in 1547, although local veneration began immediately after his death. In the Orthodox tradition, iconographic images of Alexander Nevsky are traditionally associated with the defense of the homeland, the strengthening of faith, and perseverance through severe trials. Believers pray before this image for wisdom for leaders, protection for soldiers, shielding from external enemies, and fortification of the spirit in times of crisis and doubt.
