The oval panel "The Prayer of Jesus" refers to the New Testament narrative of Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before His passion. In Christian iconography, such depictions gained wide distribution during the Late Byzantine era and later Russian religious art, reflecting the dogma of the two natures of Jesus Christ, divine and human. The face turned toward the sky and the gesture of prayer symbolize submission to the will of God the Father.
