Saint Andrew the First-Called is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, called the First-Called because he was the first to follow the Savior's call. According to tradition, he preached Christianity in the lands of the future Rus and suffered martyrdom around 60 AD on a X-shaped cross, which has since been known as St. Andrew's cross. In iconography, the apostle is traditionally depicted holding a gospel or scroll and the cross of his martyrdom.
