The icon of the Mandylion (Not Made by Hands) originates from the ancient Christian tradition concerning the healing of King Abgar of Edessa, whose face was miraculously imprinted on a cloth after touching Jesus Christ. This depiction is considered one of the earliest prototypes in Christian iconography. The icon presents the Holy Face set against the folds of the ubrus, symbolizing the divine incarnation. Traditionally, the faithful pray before this image for healing from severe physical and spiritual ailments, for the strengthening of faith, and for protection against hardships and evil thoughts.
