The Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most revered and ancient images in the Orthodox tradition, belonging to the Eleusa (Tenderness) iconographic type. According to tradition, the prototype was painted by the Evangelist Luke. The icon depicts the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the Christ Child, whose cheek touches His Mother's face, symbolizing the inseparable bond of divine love and the Savior's future sacrifice. This image is venerated as the protector of the Russian land, and the faithful traditionally pray before it for peace, healing from severe ailments—particularly heart and eye conditions—as well as for protection during times of crisis and guidance in critical decisions.
